Last Update 30 July 2013 4:59 pm TOKYO:

The head of Japan's judo authority announced his resignation on Tuesday after the sport suffered a series of scandals including abusive coaching, sexual harassment and misuse of funds. Haruki Uemura, head of the All Japan Judo Federation (AJJF), told a news conference that he would officially step down next month along with two other board members. The announcement came after the government last week took the rare step of calling on the federation to overhaul its management to atone for the scandals. "We took the recommendation gravely," Uemura said. "The vice-chairman, secretary-general and I intend to resign. You can take the resignations as being a result of the scandals." Public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo news agency reported that four board members, including Uemura, would resign. The federation could not immediately be contacted to address the discrepancy. Japan's judo community was rocked in January this year when it emerged the coach of the national women's team was found to have used a bamboo sword to beat athletes, calling his charges "ugly" and telling them to "die" in the run-up to the London Olympics. The coach later resigned. In April, judo officials were accused of improperly receiving government coaching subsidies. The following month, the federation said it was considering expelling one of its directors for life following the revelation that he made unwanted sexual advances toward a female athlete in 2011. In the wake of the scandals, the Japanese government and International Judo Federation (IJF) president Marius Vizer separately called on the country's top judo body to clean up the sport. Last month, Vizer said the world judo body has given the Japanese federation until October 15 to submit a full report on the incidents.

AIBA boxing: All boxers data will be transparent in the future

Marius Vizers's vision about world championships of all Sportaccord combat sport together in one city at the same time instead of elite World combat games programme will change participation in many IF - International federations. You will have to choose whether for savate or kickboxing or boxing because you wouldn't be able to compete in two systems at the same time. And this politics (I agree) will change activities in many IF because they wouldn't be able to borrow competitors from other Sportaccord combat sports. And AIBA is making the next step toward this goal.
In the near future every sport will have to develop its own stabile population and competitors or face the fact of being thrown out from Sportaccord. It's so easy. No speculations anymore  beetwen kickboxing, boxing and savate and filling categories with the same people in all three systems.

We are pleased to announce today the launch of the new AIBA Database.

As you will see from the attached simplified User Guide, AIBA has developed a Database which is easy to use and which provides different functions to assist the work of its National Member Federations.

The web address of the new AIBA Database is https://www.aiba-database.org/nf and the login username and password is the same as what has been used for the registration of the AIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in 2012 and AIBA Competitions thereafter

One of the major functions in the new AIBA Database is the National Federations Module. In this Module, all National Federations will be able to add and edit information on Boxers, Coaches, Referees & Judges, Ringside Doctors, Physiotherapists and other affiliated members of the National Federations. This will allow all National Federations to manage and maintain control over their own Boxing Family within the AIBA Database.

Additional features are the Entries and Registration for the AOB Competitions, the APB Competition Management and the Local Organizing Committee function in case you host an AIBA and/or Confederation Competition. Detailed functions, advantages and instructions on how to use the new AIBA Database can be found in the attached AIBA Database User Guide.

The AIBA HQs Office is pledged to continue improving this Database by developing more features and will do its best to accommodate any assistance you might need to manage the National Federations’ Module in the AIBA Database.

If we can be of any further assistance to you in this matter, please contact us via database@aiba.org. The full version of the User Guide will soon be available on the AIBA website.

FISU: Universiades to fill a gap beetween Youth Olympic and Olympic games?

FISU President Reflects

(ATR) International University Sports Federation President Claude-Louis Gallien tells Around the Rings he is pleased with the results of the first week of the Summer Universiade 2013.
Kul Sharif Mosque in Kazan (ATR)

The Games, he says, will leave a positive lasting legacy for the Russian host city of Kazan.

“In six years, Kazan is not the same city – it is totally changed,” Gallien said in an interview with ATR on Friday. “Most of the venues are new and what I see is that these venues are at the highest technical level. I think that the quality of the Games has been very high.

“Since Kazan has economical vision, there is a new airport and a new hospital here and for us we want to improve health – we are very careful about our legacy. I believe the heritage from these Games will be very positive for Kazan and for us it is also our goal.”

The 27th Summer Universiade is taking place in Kazan from July 6-17. Approximately 11,000 student athletes from 162 countries are competing in a record 27 sports.
FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien (ATR)

The Universiade is an international multi-sport competition, organized for university athletes by FISU. The name combines the words “University” and “Olympiad.” The Games, which were first contested in Turin, Italy in 1959, can also be referred to as the World University Games or World Student Games.

FISU is the second largest multi-sport organization in the world next to the IOC.

“We are obviously not competitors [with the IOC], but maybe we can be complimentary,” Gallien said. “We can be the step between the Youth Olympic Games and the Olympic Games. For athletes we provide the possibility of being in a very high level multi-sport competition. For some athletes and also cities who may not want to host an Olympic Games, we can be an alternative.”
Kazan's Aquatics Palace, which will help host the 2015 FINA World Championships (ATR)

The International University Sports Federation was formed in 1949. The origin of the organization dates back to the first World Student Games, which were held in Paris in 1923. The founder and organizer of these Games was French educator and scholar Jean Petitjean, who was a companion of Pierre de Coubertin.

“Since I am very close to the Olympic spirit, I like to say that they had Coubertin and we have Jean Petitjean,” said Gallien, who has also served as a Vice-President for the French National Olympic Committee since 1998. “It is now 90 years since Petitjean founded the first International University Games, so I think this is a good anniversary.”

“We are university sport and we feel very near to Olympism,” said Gallien, who became President of FISU in August of 2011, following the previous Summer Universiade in Shenzen, China. “We stick to the first idea of Coubertin that sport is part of education, and for us business is not so important.

“We want to offer education, health, sustainability and we want to teach young people to become citizens and in the development of Russia, this is something that they also want,” Gallien said.

The Kazan 2013 Games also mark the first time in the history of the Summer Universiade that a torch relay was staged.

Twenty-thousand volunteers are contributing to Kazan 2013, many of which will also serve at the Sochi Olympics next February.

Regarding other aspects of the first week of the Games, Gallien advised that the student athletes have been very satisfied with their accommodations at the Athletes Village, and transportation around the city has been working well. He said that security procedures around venues have been very strict, and for some athletes it is taking some time to get accustomed to.
